    As a heavy truck mechanic for over 30 years I can't tell you how many times I've seen where guys put it on compression and or flair fittings. Being that I work on a large fleet of mixers (cement trucks) I tend to need it fairly often. I just want to know what your take is for using pipe dope and any other guys that might see this comment. Also I've seen a couple videos showing that you are supposed to roll it up into a string and goes right down between the threads. Anyway ya I'm just curious to see what you and others think about it. Finally decent video and because of that I'm definitely going to go back and check out some of your videos from the past 👍🇨🇦🔧

    Reverse the roll and it works nice with gas tape stainless steel, we use it on work to steam air and water on sterilizers and scrape the threads befor you apply the tape so it locks better to the threads

    Why aren't plumbing fittings threads etc already designed to be waterproof without any need for this tape? We don't know how to design a leakproof fitting yet after well over a hundred years of modern plumbing 21st century?

    • @SilverCymbal

      They are extremely precise fits but water will work its way under pressure through tiny inperfections. Its the same reason that 100 years later engines still need gaskets to be assembled without leaks.

    Wrong! The REAL problem is that the male threads are truncated, while the female threads are deeper and end with an inverted edge. Putting these together leaves a triangular passage through which water slowly leaks. Putting lots of tape on won't completely fill this gap due to its shape. The ultimate solution is to use some semi-liquid sealant that can squish ALL the way into the triangular passage, or just wait a year for corrosion to fill the gap.

    The best use I found for PTFE tape is when the compression gland on stoptap or radiator valve leaks you can remove the compression nut, twist the PTFE tape into a thin cord and wrap it around the stem, push it into the gap with a thin screwdriver and then refit the compression nut. the tape is pushed down and compressed and stops the leak.

  • @chrissmith2114
    @chrissmith2114 14 годин тому

    Teflon tape causes people to overtighten fittings as the PTFE lubricates the thread. I have found that especially on central heating radiators the threads in the radiator are very rough, and with smooth chromed screw fittings the PTFE tape is just ripped off the fitting and ends up in the central heating system. Rather use a liquid gasket compound on radiators.... For tricky sealing jobs where it keeps weeping I use Loctite 55 sealing cord, which consists of a nylon / PTFE cord which instantly produces a pressure tight joint.

    You didn’t mention my pet peeve, the bargain tape, half the price, but so thin it is basically useless. Buy a quality brand. I like the yellow tape as it’s designed for gas, where any leak is very dangerous. As a result it’s generally certified and of higher quality.

    If you have a vehicle with a petrol engine, and the battery is completely dead, it won't have enough energy to activate the coil. So when you disconnected the jump starter, the engine will die. Best to charge the battery for 15 minutes or so before attempting to jump start the vehicle. Alternatively, leave the jump starter connected for 15 minutes or so before removing it. Don't forget to fully charge the jump starter afterwards!

    gas work isn't a dangerous as you'd imagine. The pressures the gas is under are very small. I once replaced a packaged gas furnace that had a gas pipe that was so loose, it turned under the weight of my pipe wrench, when I put wrench one on the pipe, and let go, to grab wrench two for the fitting. This was a natural gas system, which boils down to about 2psi. Just having the threads full of dope, and being run most of the way on, was all it took to hold gas. It takes more psi to blow bubbles in a large soda, through your straw or to clear a snorkel, than 2psi. Propane is about 15psi. By comparison, your typical water pressure in a residential setting is about 40 to 80 psi. They make a pressure cap, you can seal your gas line up with, and then you can pump it up to 40psi, and let it set overnight if you're worried about your work being gastight.

    @Bread996 15 годин тому

    1. The purpose of NPT threads is NOT to make the fittings easier to assemble. You made me laugh with that one. National Pipe Taper threads are in concept, self sealing. In that there is no compression sleeve, rubber gasket, or flared ends needed to make a connection. 2. Red and blue tape spools indicate the length of tape on the spool at some big box stores. You get better value with the longer spool assuming you're not prone to losing things :) 3. When wrapping threads, unspool the tape from the BOTTOM of the spool directly to the thread for a much tighter and easier to control wrap. 4. For best results, use teflon tape on pipe threads 1" diameter and under. Use teflon paste on pipe diameters over 1".

    You’re right. I spliced high voltage cable for 16 years and in the early days we taped all our splices(15 and 35kv). If you throw tape as shown in the video, you can’t stretch the tape and pull it tight because you’re fighting the slack in the tape. I see “experts” throwing tape on electrical UA-cam videos the wrong way all the time.

    Disassemble a fitting that's been installed with Teflon Tape. Do you see anything in the threads that could have formed a seal? No. Teflon tape is NOT a sealer.
